Sharing a passion for cetaceans, Safia Nolin (music) and Maryse Goudreau (visual arts) were paired during a residency at BleuBleu Festival in the summer of 2021, during which they created a crafty ode to the living. Taking the form of a series of musical tableaux, Feu de forêt re-sacralizes nature by drawing on the naïve aesthetics of 6th grade shows and church hall parties. Accompanied by 3 acolytes, Safia and Maryse invite festival-goers into a church basement for a celebration drenched in the sounds and vibrations of the sea, inspired by the mythical worlds of l’Évangile en papier and Rossy stores.

Safia Nolin + Maryse Goudreau
With her dark folk songs, Safia Nolin has charmed critics and audiences alike since her debut. Whether she’s singing her own compositions or covering québecois classics, she transports us into her unique universe. Maryse Goudreau is a visual and media artist living in Escuminac. Her hybrid work flows through the forms of photography, video essays, interactive art, immersive installations, action art and sound art. They are both passionate about whales – specifically orcas for Safia, and belugas for Maryse – and it is on that basis that they first met. Feu de forêt is their second collaborative work.
