Milieu de Nulle Part

December 12th, 2002: a man dies of a heart attack in front of Place des Arts Théâtre Maisonneuve’s inner court. 17 years later, his daughter created a wandering performance on the site of her father’s disappearance for one spectator at a time, with whom she held hands.

Due to the pandemic, the performance is now within the participants’ hands, who will have to wander on their own in their neighbourhood, with the help of a soundtrack, instructions, and, for some, a phone conversation. How does the story of one’s grievance inform the collective mourning that we have faced in the past few weeks? Confronted with the impossibility of holding hands, a desire for a tactile intimacy haunts this experience.

Mélanie Binette is an interdisciplinary artist, performer and researcher, director and co-founder of Milieu de Nulle Part, an in situ and in socius art collective. She is particularly interested in the way that performances transform sites by creating virtual, alternative and mythical spaces, blurring the boundaries of the so-called real world.
