Cabaret Essence is an open and participatory ritual where spoken word artists, dancers, and musicians move within a continuous flow, celebrating Afrocentric legacies and Afrofuturist visions. Resembling a “sacralized open mic,” music, words, and movement enable the emergence of collective imaginaries. Under the May sky, artists and audiences co-create this circular ceremony by drawing on what Athena calls “ancestral technologies.”

Supported by several artists, this celebration is rooted in improvisation and the engagement of everyone involved. The invitation is open to all. Each participation helps envision possible futures, manifest the power of collective action, and anchor creation in ancestral knowledge and magic. Art thus becomes a tool to unite, transform, and summon both the visible and the invisible.

The project aligns with Athena’s ongoing research on healing, performance, and revolutionary collective rituals, highlighting the power of a community in motion.

About Lucie Athena Assamba
Athena Lucie Assamba is a multidisciplinary artist, performer, and choreographer-researcher of Cameroonian origin. Navigating fluidly between traditional and contemporary African dances along with street styles such as waacking, dancehall, ndombolo, and afro house, she approaches the body as a space of memory, transmission, and transformation. Informed by her background in neuroscience, she has created several works that probe the connections between movement, consciousness, and healing. She is a member of the Montreal-based collective Afrodojomtl, which fosters the practice, transmission, and celebration of Afro-descendant dances.
